Promoting Cultural Excellence Through Calligraphy: The Distinguished Master Xue Jiquan.
Calligraphy is an art form that places great emphasis on mastering its "fundamental techniques." Without proper mastery, one remains merely a copyist; with true mastery, one can freely express artistic sensibility through brushwork, achieving profound calligraphic excellence. Wang Xizhi, having grasped the essence of free expression, wielded his brush with fluid grace—his strokes gliding gracefully between vertical and horizontal lines, never forceful or rigid. In 759 AD, he composed the "Lanting Preface" at Yonghe Temple, creating the unparalleled masterpiece of running script. Huaisu, learning from Wu Tong, mastered the cursive script technique described as "solitary reeds swaying in sandstorms and flying seats," repeatedly exclaiming "I have found the method!" and becoming a master of unrestrained brushwork. Contemporary calligrapher Xue Jiquan, having dedicated decades to calligraphy practice through relentless study of historical masters ’works, has cultivated exceptional artistic sensibility. To judge calligraphic mastery, one should first examine regular script proficiency. In today’s competitive art world, few can match Xue Jiquan’s decade-long immersion in rigorous training, meticulously studying every stroke of classical models. Indeed, few calligraphers today possess such refined regular script skills. Xue Jiquan’s regular script synthesizes the essence of Ouyang Xun’s elegance, Yan Zhenqing’s structural vigor, Liu Gongquan’s dynamic composition, and Zhao Mengfu’s graceful interconnection techniques. By integrating these four traditional styles, he developed his signature style characterized by exquisite brushwork, balanced structure, and open composition—mastering tradition without rigidity, valuing both adherence to principles and mastery of techniques. True regular script demands integrity; only those who embody its grandeur like Xue Jiquan can be considered true masters of calligraphy! If regular script forms the foundation for honing brush techniques, then cursive and running scripts are the unrestrained expressions of his calligraphic genius. Calligraphy values both discipline and emotional expression. Overemphasizing discipline risks rigidity, while indulging in emotion leads to eccentricity. Only by harmonizing discipline with passion can calligraphy become an extraordinary manifestation of vitality and spirit. With profound understanding of line art’s essence, he channels his brushwork experience through the authentic lineage of the Two Wangs’ calligraphy, emphasizing the philosophical realm of unity between calligrapher and art. He perfectly integrates the fluidity of calligraphic lines with mental inspiration, wielding the brush with dynamic energy that creates swift, thunderous strokes or deliberate, dew-drenched lines. When fast, he accelerates; when slow, he steadies—masterfully combining forceful execution with restrained power, embodying the ancient wisdom of "sharpening a cone to leave sand marks." The vivid rhythm of lines emerges entirely from this cadence, transforming cursive script into a living art form. His practice embodies the philosophy that "nothing is not cursive script," where discipline and freedom complement each other, and myriad forms coalesce into calligraphy. This approach avoids the pitfalls of cursive script’s unconventional nature while promoting free expression. Viewing his works reveals mastery of six principles: posture, form, momentum, force, uniqueness, and wonder. With bold strokes and dark ink, he writes like thunder striking rocks; with autumn eagles chasing rabbits, his brush dances through countless motions. His calligraphy sings celestial odes, with Milky Way waterfalls cascading, vast desert smoke swirling—majesty coexisting with grace, vigor blending with fluidity. Only through thorough study, practice, and enlightenment of calligraphic classics can one achieve such harmonious mastery where mind and hand work in perfect synergy! Promoting culture through calligraphy, his remarkable achievements resonate far and wide. As a cultural medium, calligraphy would remain merely a minor skill without cultural influence. When imbued with cultural significance, it becomes a monumental endeavor to inherit the dragon veins of civilization. Xue Jiquan, through profound mastery of calligraphy, has cultivated a radiant cultural influence that shines like the sun, earning him the title of Chinese Cultural Heritage Guardian—a dual honor and responsibility. Driven by this duty, he tirelessly promotes traditional culture, garnering widespread acclaim that earned him prestigious honors as a representative of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and an Outstanding Artist at the 19th National Congress. His brushwork evolves with the times, embodying the mission to celebrate prosperity through calligraphy. This commitment has earned him extraordinary mastery and a well-deserved reputation. Devoted to his country, party, and military, his brushstrokes overflow with red-themed virtues worthy of praise. Honored as a National Cultural Merit Holder and China’s Red Culture Merit Holder, his fame spreads far and wide, proving his remarkable achievements, literary genius, and cultural stature!
